Lucid for Android
Privacy Policy
Effective 4 November 2026 · Applies to the Lucid Android app and this website
The short version. Lucid reads the text under its lens so it can translate it. It keeps no copy, has no account system, and contains no analytics, advertising or tracking. With the on-device engine nothing leaves your phone. With the online engine, only the line under the lens is sent to Google Translate, over an encrypted connection, and it is not stored by us.
1. Who we are
Lucid is an Android app published by Grafizum, a sole proprietorship based in Switzerland (“we”, “us”). Grafizum is the controller for the processing described in this policy. Operator details are in the Legal Notice.
This policy explains what the app does with your information. It covers the app itself and this website; it does not cover other apps or websites you visit while using the lens.
2. What Lucid reads
Lucid is a floating lens. When you drag it over text and let it rest, it reads only the run of text directly under the lens — one chat bubble, one menu row, one line of a page. It does not read the rest of the screen, and it does not read anything while the lens is still moving.
Reading happens in two ways, depending on what is on screen:
- Text access. Android’s accessibility interface is asked what text sits at that point. This returns the exact string and its position. Lucid uses it for nothing else: it does not click, type, navigate or control other apps.
- Look mode (optional, off by default). For photos, video, and apps that hide their text, Lucid asks for screen capture, takes one still frame per read, recognises the text on it, and keeps nothing. Capture ends when you turn the lens off, and Android shows a permanent indicator while it is active.
3. Where your text goes
Lucid has two translation engines, and you choose which one runs.
| Engine | What happens to the text |
|---|---|
| On-device | Language detection and translation run in Google ML Kit models on your phone. The text never leaves the device. |
| Online (default) | The line under the lens — plus a little of the surrounding screen text, which is used only to keep the line’s meaning — is sent over HTTPS to Google’s translation service (translate.googleapis.com) and the translation comes back. Nothing is sent to us, and we run no server that receives your text. |
You can switch to the on-device engine at any time in the app under Engine. If the online service cannot be reached, Lucid says so instead of sending your text anywhere else: there is no other translation provider, and no fallback service.
4. What is stored on your phone
Lucid stores a small set of settings, and nothing else:
- the language you translate into;
- whether auto-translate is on, and which engine you chose;
- where the lens was last placed on the screen;
- whether you added the quick-settings button;
- whether you have read and agreed to the text-access note.
These live in the app’s private storage on your device. They are not uploaded anywhere. No scanned text, translation or history is stored — the card on screen is drawn from memory and disappears when you touch elsewhere, move the lens, or turn it off.
5. What we never collect
- No accounts, names, email addresses or phone numbers.
- No analytics, crash reporting or usage statistics.
- No advertising, advertising identifiers or trackers of any kind.
- No device identifiers, IP-based profiles or location data.
- No history of what you looked up.
- No screen recordings. Look mode holds a single frame in memory while it reads, and discards it.
6. Permissions
- Display over other apps — draws the lens above the app you are using.
- Accessibility (text access) — reads the text under the lens. This is the permission Android treats most sensitively; Lucid explains it in plain language inside the app and asks you to agree before the switch is offered, and the explanation is shown again if you decline and come back to it.
- Screen capture (media projection) — only if you turn on look mode. Requested for the whole display, one frame per read.
- Notifications — the single ongoing notice that keeps the lens session alive, with a button to stop it.
- Internet — the online engine and one-time downloads of on-device language models.
You can withdraw any of these in Android’s settings at any time. Lucid notices and stops using that capability.
7. Copying text
The Copy button on a translation card places the scanned original text on your clipboard, at your request. The clipboard is managed by Android; Lucid does not read it.
8. Third-party services
- Google Translate — receives the line being translated when the online engine is used. Google’s handling of that request is described in the Google Privacy Policy and the Google terms.
- Google ML Kit — on-device language identification, translation and text recognition, plus model downloads through Google Play services.
These are the only third parties involved. Lucid contains no other SDK that transmits data.
9. Why we process it, and on what basis
We run no server that receives your text: the app sends nothing to Grafizum, and we hold no personal data about you. What Lucid does on your phone happens under your control, and the only processing we take part in is answering you if you write to us. For that, under the Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection (FADP) we rely on processing in good faith, purpose limitation and proportionality; where the GDPR applies, the basis is our legitimate interest in answering you and keeping the app secure.
Where the online engine is used, the translation request goes directly from your phone to Google, under Google’s terms — we neither see it nor store it.
10. Your rights
Because we hold nothing about you, there is normally nothing to hand over or erase. You can still write to privacy@grafizum.com to ask what we hold, to have it corrected or deleted, or to object to our processing — we answer within 30 days. You can also complain to a supervisory authority: in Switzerland the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC), in the EU or EEA the authority where you live.
11. Security
What Lucid keeps is protected by Android’s app sandbox. Anything that leaves the phone — a translation request, a model download — travels over HTTPS. There is no store of scanned text on our side to lose.
12. Children
Lucid is a general-purpose translation tool and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children, because we do not collect personal information at all.
13. Your choices
- Switch to the on-device engine to keep every word on your phone.
- Turn look mode off, or never enable it.
- Revoke any permission in Android’s settings.
- Clear the app’s stored settings with Clear storage in Android’s app info, or by uninstalling Lucid — this removes everything the app kept, because it is all on your device.
14. Retention
We hold no personal data about you, so there is nothing for us to retain or delete on our side. Anything Lucid keeps lives on your phone and disappears when you clear the app’s storage or uninstall it. Text sent to Google Translate for a translation is handled under Google’s terms, not retained by us.
15. Changes to this policy
If Lucid starts doing something new with data, this page will say so before the change ships, and the effective date above will move. Material changes will also be noted in the app’s release notes.
